Search the Online Catalog

You can search for both print and electronic books through the Library's online catalog. Type the keyword(s) in the search bar below and then hit 'Search'. Keywords can be any combination of words from the author, title, or subject fields. Examples are:

  • anthropology
  • revolut* and United States (will retrieve revolution, revolutionary, revolutions and so on COMBINED with United States)
  • Sigmund Freud (books by or about Sigmund Freud)

Tip: Keep in mind that you only need a few keywords for any search.  The more words you enter the fewer results you will find.  Try to limit your keywords to 3 or less.

Additionally, you don't not have to search by keyword. You can also search by Title, Author, Subject, Journal Title, or Call Number. Keyword searching is the best choice though when looking for a resources on a topic.

Welcome

Welcome to the PTC Libraries' guide for History.  Here you will find tools to assist you in conducting History research. Keep in mind that history is broken up into four different periods:

  • Ancient History (up through the 4th Century)
  • Medieval History (from the 5th Century through the 14th Century)
  • Early Modern History (From the 15th Century through the 18th Century)
  • Modern History (From the 19th Century through the present)

Each period is distinct and many resources cover only a few of the periods listed.  For that reason it is important to pay extra attention to the resources you use.  Something strong in Medieval History may not be strong in Modern History.

Additionally, history covers everything that has ever happened and is in many ways crosses multiple disciplines.  Because of this, what resources you use will depend upon what you are studying specifically.  For instance, information about medicine in the Medieval period can be found in a medical database.

If you have any questions, you may ask for help by using our Ask a Librarian service or contact me by using the information listed under my profile.

Good luck with your research!
